External Applications in Anthroposophic Nursing

Rhythmical Whole-Body Embrocation According to Wegman/Hauschka

Kind of substance

Solum uliginosum oil

Guiding principle for the application

The quality of the nurse's movements, the rhythmical strokes and circles, sends impulses to the patient's life processes, while stimulating warmth development, so that the patient's skin and circulation are enlivened. The person's breathing is deepened and the patient simultaneously reaches a great inner peace and emotional equilibrium. Rhythmical embrocation involves the support of all prophylactic aspects of daily nursing and can be integrated into the daily routine. The choice of substance is an added support for the treatment and is chosen individually in each case.

Guiding Principle for the substance

Case example

Example case 1: severe migraine for 30 years
The female patient suffered from severe migraine for 30 years, which she could only tolerate with the frequent use of triptans and analgesics. Her condition improved only moderately with anthroposophic medication. The breakthrough came with rhythmical embrocation treatments. After the first treatment cycle of six embrocations the headaches had improved considerably, she was able to significantly reduce her pain medication. We agreed to a lengthy interval without rhythmical embrocations. After the third cycle of treatments she was free of pain for a time, so the treatment-free intervals were lengthened. The anthroposophic medication was continued unaltered during the entire time. Gradually she was able to extend the treatment-free intervals more and more and the 50-year-old patient has now been free of pain for 3 years.
After this radical improvement the patient began trauma therapy, which helped her to process her hard childhood. For years she had been as if frozen in her body and now she "slowly thawed", began to perceive her body, so that she could precisely indicate where she felt each therapeutic touch mirrored in her body.
To begin with we interrupted the treatment cycles for as long as it took until the improvement diminished, then she contacted me. Now she comes once a year quasi for prophylactic reasons. She continues to take the anthroposophic medication and her migraines have vanished entirely. She was able to discontinue the allopathic pain medication.

Example case 2: difficulty falling asleep
Following an acute infection, a 45-year-old female patient was no longer able to fall asleep. She had completely lost her day-night rhythm, which led to acute exhaustion. Otherwise she was healthy. Surprisingly, she was able to sleep normally again after just one full-body rhythmical embrocation with solum oil.

Example case 3: difficulty sleeping through the night
A mother of 6 children (including the youngest one who died), middle-aged, has not been able to sleep through the night since the birth of her first child. She has to make do with about 4 hours of sleep. Nevertheless she is able to cope with her workload. She is 50 years old and is now gradually beginning to miss healthy sleep. At the recommendation of a doctor she comes for a series of 6 rhythmical whole-bady embrocations with solum oil. Initially she makes a cheerful impression and her body is evenly warm throughout. After the first treatment she sleeps through the night for the first time in years. This state does not last. During the course of the week she begins sleeping less well, but she is able to fall asleep again when she wakes up. In contrast, for years she had been lying awake for 2–3 hours a night until morning.
The following symptom was interesting: she had enjoyed drinking a glass of white wine with her husband in the evenings. That is no longer possible. Since the treatment she cannot sleep at all after a glass of wine.
The patient remained in treatment for 8 months, with intervals, and has usually been able to sleep deeply through the night since then.

Example case 4: shock after an accident
The following case shows how the profound effects of shock became visibly treatable only after the begin of rhythmical embrocation treatments.
An elderly lady, still very hale despite being of retirement age, had been very content with her life until an accident (falling from a ladder 4 years ago). She suffered no physical harm at the time, only a shock, which seemed to hold her captive ever since. "Her inner sun had disappeared" and she was no longer able to meditate. In addition, the migraines from which she had suffered for decades became more severe. Someone had given her 6 rhythmical embrocations as a gift, so she did not see any reason to talk about her problems with the person treating her.

THE COURSE OF TREATMENT
1st RHYTHMICAL WHOLE-BODY EMBROCATION (RWBE): After the first treatment she felt a great sense of well-being for the first time in a long time, felt very warmed through, but that evening after the treatment she was beset by images of the accident.
2nd RWBE: She is now very preoccupied with the accident; she had only spoken to one person about the effects of the accident. This person then withdrew, so that she never mentioned it again.
3rd RWBE: Her inner sun has returned. Afterwards she talked about the effects of the accident for the first time and also about the migraines.
4th RWBE: The 3rd anniversary of the accident is approaching. She has a severe migraine lasting 4 days (unusually severe and long in her experience, she has been having migraines for about 50 years), ending one day before the next rhythmical embrocation. In the evening she felt like she was dissolving, it was not unpleasant, but unusual.
5th RWBE: She experienced increasing inner joy and equanimity through the rhythmical embrocations. The light in her persists and she can meditate again. The treatment now lies nine years in the past and her condition has continued, the patient has remained bright, meditates, and the migraines have improved considerably. There was no additional specific therapy during the time of the rhythmical embrocations. For years she had been taking the following medications: Cardiodoron®, Kephalodoron®, Homviotensin®, and Ferrum phosphoricum irregularly. She also continued them during the rhythmical embrocation treatments.

Example case 5: Rheumatic complaints involving the joints in the hands and feet
A 40-year-old female patient had developed a chronic rheumatic illness after angina. The joints of her hands and feet were severely affected, so that she could not climb stairs in the mornings. She also had congested fluid throughout her body, so that this young woman gained approx. 10 k. In addition she suffered from painful pressure in the kidney area and had to urinate up to 7 times a night, which made it hard to sleep. She sweated profusely over her whole body. She was also clearly suffering from exhaustion after approx. 5 years of this, mainly treated anthroposophically, but also with a low dosage of cortisone.
Weekly rhythmical whole-body embrocation according to Wegman/Hauschka changed this months-long, now unbearable condition after the 3rd treatment. First she noticed that she had to urinate much less at night, enabling her to sleep better, and the pressure pain in the kidney region diminished. After the 7th treatment she was able to sleep through the night. Gradually also the joint pain diminished and disappeared, although only for a short time, when it returned, but not with the same intensity as before. Her kidney region remained free of pain, the patient continued to sleep through the night.
The treatment was given over a period of 1½ years.
